CAROUSEL FOR UNIVERTY OF SANTA CRUZ CALIFORNIA

UCSC subcontracted the development and fabrication of the SCALES (Slicer Combined with an Array of Lenslets for Exoplanet Spectroscopy) carousel to OMP. This included support for preliminary design, concurrent engineering with suppliers, and participation in formal reviews up to the CDR. A full set of analyses, fabrication drawings, and assembly drawings was delivered, and the parts were procured and assembled at the OMP facility.

The carousel is a cryogenic mechanism capable of positioning 14 different optical components within the SCALES beam. It features a precision indexing arm that is hysteresis-free, ensuring repeatable mechanical positioning within a few microns. A cryogenic motor enables position changes but is decoupled from the indexing mechanism, providing superior accuracy and eliminating power dissipation during position maintenance.

The design also includes a finely crafted, vibration-isolated, and desiccated shipping container to ensure the safe delivery of the carousel to UCSC.
